I often get calls of customers asking to purchase "bug bombs" and say that they have bed bugs. We have been programmed to think that bombs are the end-all be-all in insect destruction, that these bombs release destruction on a mass scale and will instantly wipe your house clean of any infestation you might be dealing with. This couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, you will probably make the problem worse. Bug bombs do not penetrate the cracks and crevices bed bugs hide in and they tend to scatter the bugs.
The first reason that makes the so-called bug bombs fall hopelessly short is the fact that they do not penetrate the cracks and crevices that the bed bugs hide in. When one buys these things we envision setting them off and watching as the room fills with a deadly smoke that nothing can survive. Truth be told, they do put out a smoke but it is no where near thick enough or directed enough to get where it needs to go. Bed bugs hide in the tiniest places and hardest to reach of cracks and crevices. They get in places that would be tough to reach without the needed products that are designed to reach them. Think about a two pieces of wood that make a corner to a drawer that is in the middle of a dresser filled with clothes... See my point? No bomb is getting here my friends. And the ads on TV make you think that your one bug bomb away from being done with this problem, laughable. Among many other products, you need directed aerosol pesticides with attached straws that are designed to let you put spray into those cracks and crevices.
Secondly most of these bombs are repellent based. In the bug spray world this means that they will repel insects away. When you are dealing with bed bugs this means that the bed bugs will run away from the fogger. "Pop a top" in an infested room, bugs run to other parts of your house. Now you infestation has spread. Lucky you, your work load has multiplied big time.
So one might ask, what works better? The answer to this question is not simple. You will need a couple products to use in conjunction with each other. Insecticide spray to kill the adults, crack and crevice aerosol, I.G.R. to sterilize the next generation and keep them from reproducing, dust for the walls to keep them from spreading from room to room, bed bug mattress covers, a spray gun, a good flashlight, and lots of research. We have put together a kit that has everything you need all in one place. It's your best bet if you want to have a chance at going about this yourself.
